Historic Preservation Commission

The Chesterfield Township Historic Preservation Commission (HPC), established in October 2016, is responsible for protecting and preserving the Township’s historic resources and sites, as well as creating community awareness and support for historic preservation.

Chesterfield Township’s HPC helps to balance growth and development with the need to protect a community’s cultural, historical, and architectural heritage, benefiting both the local economy and the environment.

The HPC reviews all permits and development applications involving activities that affect a historic landmark or an improvement within a historic district before the permit or application can be approved for review by the Planning Board. The HPC is advisory to the Planning Board.

Township residents will benefit from historic preservation through:

  • preserving elements of cultural, social, economic, agricultural and architectural history within the historic districts and other designated individual historic sites;
  • stabilizing and improving property values within historic areas;
  • encouraging the continued use of historic buildings and facilitating their appropriate reuse;
  • managing change by preventing alterations or new construction not in keeping with the character of the districts;
  • discouraging the unnecessary demolition of historic resources; and
  • maintaining and developing an appropriate and harmonious setting for historic and architecturally significant buildings, structures or districts within Chesterfield Township

Getting Started

Visit the Application for Certificate of Appropriateness  page to determine if your project requires an application. If it does, please follow the process outlined on the page.

Feel free to contact the HPC early so we can guide you toward creating a complete application before getting too far with your planning. A complete application helps move your request along to the Planning Board as efficiently as possible. All applications must be submitted two weeks before the HPC meeting date.
